Our series shines a light on different professions behind the local businesses that you know and love. Heidi is the current chairperson of the Lancing Traders’ Association and was one of the driving forces in its creation in 2018.

LTA: What inspired you to start your own business?

Being a third generation Brightonian, I set up HR Smart to help local businesses with Human Resource (HR) advice and support, without the need to recruit their own HR Professional or incur expensive legal fees.

LTA: What is the best thing about what you do?

We help locally based businesses manage their people, HR and employment law.  We help take the stress out of managing employees by giving compliant but easy to follow advice.

LTA: What is your favourite thing about Lancing?

Location, location, location.  Coast and country within less than two miles of each other.

LTA: What pearl of wisdom would you impart to anyone wanting to set up their own business?

Put strong foundations in place from your first employee.  A contract of employment is a legal requirement not an optional choice.

LTA: Name one thing on your bucket list

Going to visit the orangutans in Borneo.

LTA: What does your perfect breakfast look like?

Full English, no toast, but not before 11.30am

LTA: Name a favourite album, film, book or TV show and tell us what it does for you

Old albums Guilty by Barbara Streisand, Bridge over Troubled Waters by Simon & Garfunkel or Fleetwood Mac, The Chain.  They remind me of family times with my dad who sadly passed away a few of years ago!

LTA: Which season is your favourite – explain

Spring or Autumn, cold clear days with blue skies, great for walking along the seaside and no tourists to spoil the view!
