About
What is u3a?
Founded in 1982 nationally, University of the Third Age (u3a) is an umbrella organisation for locally-run interest groups. It provides opportunities for members to come together to learn for fun. Lancing & Sompting is one of around 40 u3as in Sussex, and over a thousand in the UK. Members enjoy exploring new ideas, skills and activities together. Membership is open to everyone who’s no longer in full-time work.
u3a is a self-help learning organisation for people who have completed their career or finished raising a family, and provides educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. Qualifications do not feature, but the numerous interest groups offer a tremendous opportunity to try something new and learn about a whole range of subjects and activities. Members share their knowledge and talents with each other; u3a does not provide services for its members – members provide them for each other.
Some groups meet in members’ homes, others in local venues where a small fee is charged towards room rental. For full details of our groups, go to the Groups tab atthe top of this page.
