Well that's a good question.  Lancing is mentioned in the Doomsday Book from 1070 ad

Lancing has an approximate population of 19,000 although it is still classed as a Civil Parish. Which makes us one of the biggest villages in Europe!

Lancing has a lot of history, some of it dating back as far as the 1800’s. A Romano Celtic temple near Lancing Ring was excavated in 1828 and 1829 by a Mr Medhurst. Bronze and I A Sepulchral pottery was found on the site which suggests that it was a sacred site before the Roman period (before 625 BC).

Many artifacts have since been found in the area; including a Sceat. A type of thick silver coin that was made in England, Frisia, and Jutland during the Anglo-Saxon period. We’ve included a map which indicates where in Lancing the Iron Age Shrine is. 

During World War One, Lancing had three work camps for Prisoners Of War (POWs) mainly from Germany. The prisoners would have done laborious work. There is photographic evidence of POWs in Sompting working in an open cast quarry/ mine. For more information, visit this WordPress site.
