About
The Community Food Hub helps to fight food waste.
Community food hubs are open to all residents, you do not need a referral (that some food banks require) and are designed to help rescue food from suppliers that would otherwise have gone to waste.
Access affordable food, learn low-cost cooking and find support on a range of social issues.
In October 2022 the County Council launched a six month pilot project to encourage people to take advantage of surplus food rescue services, which in turn works to reduce the amount of edible food that ends up in people’s household rubbish bins.
Due to the success of the pilot, working with UKHarvest, Biffa and other partnerships and charities, the programme has been extended to include seven community hubs, one in each district and borough running until April 2024. For Adur District the Community Food Hub is at Southwick Community Centre, 24 Southwick Street, Southwick, BN42 4TE
Each district is hosting a UKHarvest community food hub once a month where, for a suggested small donation (£3.50), people will be able to pick up a wide selection of surplus foods which would have otherwise ended up as waste from suppliers.
Education sessions will also be held to help people reduce their food waste and save money, for example, by using up leftovers, batch cooking, or using a slow cooker.
